This is one of our favs. CALZONES.
I'm not going to give you the nitty gritty details because each time I make these I do them a little differently. But here are the essential components....
Pizza Dough {mine is from the Publix bakery and it is fantastic}
Your favorite jar of marinara sauce
Mozzarella cheese
olive oil
And your favorite pizza toppings....ours happen to be pepperoni, spinach and mushrooms.
Roll out the dough. Usually the dough for one pizza makes enough for two calzones. Throw in all your ingredients...sauce, cheese, toppings. Be generous as they will typically cook down quite a bit.
Fold dough over and brush the tops with olive oil for a nice golden brown finish. Cut a small slit in the top to vent - kind of like you would for a pie.
Bake according to directions of whatever pizza dough you use. I cooked mine on 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Its unreal. If you like, heat a little bowl of marinara sauce and enjoy dipping the more bread-y parts of the zone in the sauce.
mmmmmmm.....
I love the Publix pizza dough for calzones. We had these just last week, and they were awesome. I love it, because everyone can pick their ingredients and make it just how they like it!
ReplyDeleteIs the dough found in the Deli section at Publix? I have never purchased it but this makes me want to get some and try it out!
ReplyDeleteWe were just talking the other day about making some calzones. I can't wait to try your recipe.
ReplyDeleteThese look SO good!! I love calzones but have never thought about making them myself. I'll have to get right on it!
ReplyDeleteYum! Might save us some money runnin' to the mellow mushroom.
ReplyDeleteHi Laura - the dough is found in the bakery section at Publix. They usually have a limited supply. You have a better chance of getting it earlier in the day, but you can call and special order it too {so I've been told}. Its the best dough!
ReplyDeleteyum! can't wait to try!
